{"id":1258,"date":"2018-11-27T16:56:13","date_gmt":"2018-11-27T16:56:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.oconnorcpafirm.com\/blog\/?p=1258"},"modified":"2018-11-27T16:56:13","modified_gmt":"2018-11-27T16:56:13","slug":"givingtuesday-a-day-to-be-generous-to-many-who-need-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oconnorcpafirm.com\/blog\/2018\/11\/givingtuesday-a-day-to-be-generous-to-many-who-need-it\/","title":{"rendered":"#GivingTuesday, A day to be generous to many who need it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today is Giving Tuesday, the annual day of charitable giving that marks the beginning of the holiday season.\u00a0 We want to make sure that your generosity goes to a worthy, legitimate cause.\u00a0 Here is a way of checking if your charity is recognized by the IRS as a legitimate charitable deduction for your 2018 taxes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.irs.gov\/app\/eos\/\">https:\/\/apps.irs.gov\/app\/eos\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Additionally, do your research as to how much of your donation will really go directly toward the cause that you chose to support.\u00a0 Not all charities are created equal and just because one claims to support a cause, doesn\u2019t mean it actually does.\u00a0 Be extra cautious when making donations online through fundraisers such as GoFundMe or Facebook.\u00a0 You can vet charities through the Better Business Bureau, Wise Giving Alliance, Charity Navigator, Charity Watch or Guidestar.<\/p>\n<p>If you get solicited over the phone, ask the caller to tell you how much of every dollar goes to the cause.\u00a0 I find a lot of them hang up at that point.\u00a0 Several telemarketers that call on behalf of police and fire departments are actually scams or the police and fire department get 10 cents of every dollar.
